Group 3 - this is a highly refined mineral oil made through a process called hydrocracking. In North America this group is considered a synthetic oil, for marketing purposes.
So, while Volkswagen of America may have approved Castrol, that does not mean it is any good for your vehicle - don't forget; their biggest source of income is not from selling you a car but selling parts and performing service on it.

Group 4 - these are true synthetic oils, known as Polyalphaolefin (PAO).

Removes carbon deposits from valves and combustion chambers. Especially important in the mid-1980s LH injection cars that had a high build up of carbon deposits on and around the valves.
