As of February 2011 an upcoming second generation New Beetle is in development for the 2012 model year and expected to debut in early 2011.  It shares the A5 (PQ35) platform with the new Volkswagen Jetta and will be built alongside the Jetta at Volkswagen's plant in Puebla, Mexico. The 2012 New Beetle will receive more sporty and aggressive styling, a departure from the cute and bulbous design of the first generation, while still retaining the overall shape of the original Volkswagen Type 1.  The second generation will be slightly longer than the previous generation with a lower and longer roofline.

It will retain the FF layout of the first generation while improving interior packaging with more room in the rear. Engine options for the European market are expected to include 1.2L (105 bhp) 1.4L (160 bhp) and 2.0L (210 bhp) petrol engines, plus 1.6L (105 bhp) and 2.0L (140 bhp) TDI diesel engines, while the North American market retains the 2.5 litre inline-5 petrol engine found in the current Beetle.  A convertible version will follow the coupe in 2012.
